In the age of AI, is writing the ultimate brain gym?

As an early professional, I see AI creeping into every part of my life – personal, work, and social. From writing emails, rephrasing reports to giving prompts to start a conversation better, AI stands at par with us.

However, what I do realise is, constantly engaging ourselves to content and relying on AI to do half the talking has made my mind foggier.

What I mean is, I have outgrown the stage where Instagram reels used to glue me to the screen. Scrolling for more than 15 minutes throws me to an early mid-life crisis.

You see, the moment I feel lethargic, I straight up go for a 30-45 minutes brisk walk. My heart rate goes up, I sweat and feel lighter and happier- thanks to endorphins! 🙂

But what about the brain?

I have also realised that I feel more at peace when I am either reading a book or writing (without the need of AI, like this one). There is something about writing that activates my brain. I am using a lot of brain muscles at once – articulating thoughts, searching for better words, and forming sentences that are easier to comprehend.

They say journaling brings clarity. I feel, now I understand why.

This section – Abstract Reads is my digital journal. I write my raw, unfiltered thoughts, with little or no use of AI. And this brings a lot of clarity in my mind.

I have also realised that whenever I read, I feel much better than when I watch a content. When I read, I feel productive, as if my brain has expanded its horizons to absorb a newer understanding. However, that seldom happens with videos, and almost never when I scroll through reels after reels.

Another point that I have realised is – when I write, I tend to choose my words more carefully. I will not choose filters to bridge the gaps as I might do while talking.

Writing pushed me to think more critically and clearly.

And, all in all, the moment I click Publish, there is a release of endorphins!

So, I wonder – in the age of AI, is writing the ultimate brain gym?

Writing and reading are my favorite brain exercises, but on days when I can’t do either, I listen (instead of watching).
