Lately, I have been thinking a lot about privilege – the kind of privilege for which I didn’t have to fight as hard as others might have had to.
Last month, I decided to go on a trip with my best friend. We discussed the location, duration and the days. Not even once did we talk about the budget. We booked the tickets and the hotel, and again, didn’t cap it. We enjoyed our ourselves to the fullest, paid without thinking twice and hugged each other goodbye at the airport with the promise to meet again soon.
Now before you think, I have rich parents – I don’t.
I have wealthy parents.
Wealthy of thoughts, opinions and time. They spent their mid-twenties to late forties ensuring that both my sister and I get access to knowledge, love, people; and learned to build strong foundational values.
The result of this rigorous training has been multifold: we understood what truly matters in life. We read great books, dress well to feel confident – not impress, and don’t indulge with people unnecessary.
This horse-eyed focus has made me laser-focused at work and independent, more importantly financially independent.
Now, why do I call this a privilege?
Because at my age, my parents couldn’t have thought of going on a trip like this, especially my mother. My mother had to leave her job after getting married. And though she was in a beautiful marriage for 26 years, she was not financially independent.
But both my parents ensured that I realise the value of ethical work and money. They taught me to be wealthy and not rich.
I read a beautiful line somewhere recently, may be quoted by Morgan Housel – Wealth is the money you don’t spend. This struck a deep chord.
It is a privilege to be on my own terms with money. That doesn’t mean I am a spindrift, but mindful.
It is a privilege that being a woman, I can take such trips, buy gifts for my sister and contribute to the betterment for my family.
All because of the privilege of having such open-minded parents. ❤
Ability to read, write and comprehend is also a privilege, and books (also Audio books) are a great way to expand your thinking.
